Scott Cuthbert believes momentum will be the key to Leyton Orient’s success this season as they continue to compete in three competitions.

The O’s progressed into the second round of the FA Cup, with a comfortable 5-2 win over non-league Southport on Saturday and will now face Walsall at home next month.

Orient are also in the Johnstone’s Paint trophy and face Stevenage tomorrow, but Cuthbert doesn’t feel that it will affect their league form.

Cuthbert said: “Nothing is a distraction we just take each game as it comes, whether it’s a league game, Johnstone's Paint Trophy or the FA Cup.

“The main thing was getting through to the second round, and credit to Southport they were excellent for large parts of the first half."

He added: “The manager keeps telling us, we’ve got to keep the momentum going and we look at every game the same and right now that’s what we’re doing.

“We could have easily taken our foot off the pedal against Southport considering the changes we made, but we showed our class, saw the game out and got the goals we needed.”

Orient have had some impressive runs in the FA Cup in recent years, forcing a fifth round replay with Arsenal in 2011 and narrowly losing to Hull City in extra time last year.

The O’s also got to the area finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last season, but went out to rivals Southend over two legs.

Despite their recent achievements in cup competitions, Cuthbert wants the team to stay focused on their next game and not what could await in the third round, or beyond that.

Cuthbert said: “We know the Championship and Premiership sides don’t come in until the third round but we’ve got to get past the second round first.

“We need to stay focused on our next game, before we start thinking about getting any big teams.”
