Leyton Orient’s game against Scunthorpe United proved to be the sideshow to events that have been unfolding at the club over the past week.

Rumours were rife around the ground that Russell Slade had been approached by Cardiff City and one had to wonder whether this could be the last time we’ll see him in the Orient dugout.

Will he stay or will he go? It should be noted that Russell himself claims to be ‘in the dark’ about the whole situation although it’s telling that he also said that he considered Cardiff to be a huge club and that he was proud of the connection.

It is clear that Russell is only one of a number on the shortlist – Neil Lennon has also been in the press linked to the role – so I don’t think fans should be expecting any imminent news on the matter.

Nevertheless, with the well documented ‘ultimatum’ and subsequent reconciliation between Slade and the ownership there is a chance that within this season he may well find himself out in the cold at some point to make way for the new ownership’s man.

If he does get offered the Cardiff job there are few who would begrudge him the move. This is a different opportunity to the Barnsley job that he was offered a few seasons ago; although dealing with Cardiff’s maverick owner Vincent Tan will no doubt play on his mind.

The game itself should give Orient fans hope that the team has the ability to achieve promotion. An all-around good performance where we looked threatening in attack and committed in defence is the bedrock of how Orient played last season and it looks finally like the O's are finding their way towards a settled first team.

The importance of Lloyd James and Dean Cox cannot be understated – both are essential going forward with James providing a range of passing that no one else can and Cox often involved in the team’s best chances. At the back playing Shane Lowry adds a bit more presence and solidity; it is good to see that Russell Slade has made a move to rectify a less than certain defence.

Whoever is in long-term charge of the club needs to work with the team to keep on improving their understanding with each other, especially in attack.

The final score may have been 2-1 but in truth we had opportunities to make the game much more comfortable but the wrong decision was taken or the final ball wasn’t quite there.

However Orient fans can take heart from a well-earned three points on the road even if there’s still uncertainty in air around Brisbane Road.
