Kevin Nugent has admitted he would be excited by the opportunity to become the new manager of Leyton Orient.

The caretaker boss watched his side fluff their lines as they squandered a half-time lead to lose 3-2 at home to ten-man Rochdale this afternoon. But Nugent has thrown his hat into the ring to replace Russell Slade.

Nugent said: "I'm sure there will be people interested because it's a fantastic job for someone. I'm sure there will be interest in it but I don't know.

"I've obviously worked here a long time and I've done the youth team, scouting and all sorts. Changing the role to head coach is something that would certainly excite me but we'll have to wait and see."

Slade resigned from the club on Wednesday night although his move to Cardiff City has not been confirmed because Orient are still talking to lawyers over his exit.

Nugent said: "I don't know too much but I obviously know he's resigned. That's public knowledge. I don't know too much about any other situation.

"It's slightly strange but you come in and do the job. Obviously I've been at the club a long time and hopefully you do the best while you're there. It's three times [as a caretaker boss] at Leyton Orient and once at Swansea as well so we'll see what happens."

When asked if he was interested in following Slade to Cardiff as assistant manager, Nugent replied: "It's a fantastic club and I think it's a great appointment for Cardiff. They are a club slightly on the dip and he will go in there and sort them out but as you know I'm just concentrating on today's game and nothing more than that really."
