Kevin Nugent has confirmed he has been offered the position as Leyton Orient head coach and still retains total belief in his ability to help them climb out of trouble.

Nugent has taken charge of the side over the last week but the O's have been beaten twice at home.

When asked about the Orient position and if he expected to join Cardiff City as Russell Slade's assistant, Nugent said: "They're looking at a different route of head coach. I've been offered that role but there are still discussions going on with it.

"As I understand it Russell hasn't got the job at Cardiff anyway at the moment so that's a no on that one.

"In terms of discussions I've spoken to them about getting the job here and they've offered it but we haven't moved too much further than that.

"I'd like to think so [it's still on the table]. If someone offers you something, then if it's [taken away] two defeats there's not much longevity in it anyway further down the line. But that's how it is at the moment mainly because the whole week was concentrating on this game and now we've got Dagenham on Tuesday and a big game away next weekend [Sheffield United].

"I want to do so well for this football club as do the players so the main thing is getting Leyton Orient back up there."

Supporters have vented their anger at the possibility of Nugent taking over on a permanent basis after watching the two defeats. But the coach insists he has the confidence to turn around the club's fortunes.

Nugent said: "I have full belief in my own abilty and with the players we've got."
