Kevin Nugent has admitted he is no closer to being appointed Leyton Orient's head coach after his side won 2-0 at Dagenham & Redbridge in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy this evening.

Nugent has confirmed he has been offered the head coach position but accepts he may not still be the club's favoured appointment following back-to-back home defeats in the league.

Nugent said: "It stays the same as it was on Saturday. I have been offered the role [head coach]. That's never been any different and I've always said that. Now whether that head coach role has changed or the paremeters of the actual job description has changed I don't know anything about that.

"We will wait and see but all I want to make sure we do is while I'm looking after the first team of Leyton Orient we pick up points and get ourselves up the league."

Nugent added: "I think the head coach role is pretty much the same [as manager] to be honest. I think it's quite similar. There's nothing particularly stalling it but we've lost two games at home and I've been in charge of them. They have been poor defeats so maybe someone will think 'that's not the one' and I can understand that.

"But all I want to make sure is whilst I'm in charge that the players are getting looked after and everyone knows I absolutely want to make sure Leyton Orient are in safe hands.

"As it stands now I'm happy to be doing what I'm doing whether you call it caretaker manager. I'm not quite sure what you call it at the moment. But I'm happy to be doing it. Any person that's worked for Leyton Orient for as long as I have is happy and proud to be standing out there. I just want to make sure we start climbing up the league table."

Former Orient boss Russell Slade was confirmed as Cardiff City manager yesterday and Nugent was initially linked with a move to join his coaching staff.

Asked whether this was a possibility, he replied: "I don't know. I know it's a fantastic appointment for them and certainly wish him all the best. Anything further than that I don't really know to be honest."
