Mauro Milanese has admitted he did not have any ambition to become the new Leyton Orient boss and accepted it after owner Francesco Becchetti asked him to until "another decision will be made."

The Italian was speaking following the O's 2-0 defeat to Preston this evening after replacing Kevin Nugent as their new manager on Sunday.

Milanese, who was previously the sporting director at the club, said: "The president called me on Sunday morning to say he wanted me in charge until another decision will be made so I'm happy to stay here and do my job.

"I'm also happy to be back as a sporting director as well. The most important thing is Leyton Orient to climb up the table.

"The president asked me to do this and I needed to follow this. It was not an ambition of mine. After three years as a sporting director in Italy and this as the fourth one I had no reason to change the job. But of course I will try my best in any position the president asks of me.

"But if you ask my ambition it is to win some games in any position whether it is football director, caretaker, head coach or manager."

Milanese's comments suggested he does not see himself as a long-term solution as a successor to former manager Russell Slade.

He said: "I'm here obviously but if no results come then I think it's normal that we change again but we will try to do the best for a few games and see if the lads react."

Nugent has reverted back to assistant coach of the League 1 strugglers and Milanese insisted he is keen to keep him at Brisbane Road.

Milanese said: "He's the assistant coach and I'm very happy with him. He's a man you can trust and always gives you support whether before with Russell Slade and when he was in charge.

"He's a professional and it's important he stays at the club in any position. I didn't ask for any other assistant coach and I'm happy with the staff we have."
