Nathan Clarke expects fans to see Mauro Milanese impose his own style of play on the team over the coming games after only having a short time to work with the players.

The new Italian manager has taken charge of two matches but only had a couple of training sessions between last week’s defeat to Preston North End and Saturday’s draw with Coventry City at Brisbane Road.

But with no midweek match, Milanese has had more time to work with his squad and Clarke expects this to pay off with the team becoming more comfortable under their latest boss.

The Orient captain said: “It’s obviously difficult with him only having three training sessions and two matches but there are little glimpses that you can see he wants us to press high and hard which you saw out there. If it wasn’t for a last-minute goal we would have got the three points [against Coventry].

“It’s been good. Training has been a little bit longer to get his point across and rightly so. He’s coming in with not much time on the training pitch and he’s got to get his point across. The lads have responded well and the training’s been really good. You saw glimpses of what he was looking for and we have to keep believing in each other.”

The O’s have a chance to claim their first win under Milanese this weekend when they travel to Oldham Athletic in the first round of the FA Cup.

Orient picked up a victory at their League One rivals back in August and Clarke believes the side will take confidence from this success into Saturday’s tie.

“We’re going there having had a 3-1 win earlier in the season,” he said. “Any win that we’ve had is giving us plenty of confidence and we’re going to have another solid week of training and listening to the manager’s views on how he wants us to play. You saw that against Coventry with our pressing and a very high tempo.”

Clarke was involved in the visitors’ first goal after his slip enabled Coventry to score.

The skipper felt it was indicative of their time towards the bottom this season where any mistake has being ruthlessly punished.

He said: “It’s just one of those things where as soon as you slip you’re hoping and praying your teammates are going to dig you out but it just wasn’t to be.

“Again I think it’s their only shot in the first half and they only had one in the second half. But it’s just been like that at the moment.

“We’ve got to stay positive and I felt we played really positive. The tempo was fantastic and we’ve got to keep positive.”
