Leyton Orient have confirmed the appointment of Fabio Liverani as Leyton Orient's new manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal, replacing Mauro Milanese.

The 43-year-old only succeeded caretaker manager Kevin Nugent on October 26 but won just twice - once in the league - in eight games as Orient boss.

Saturday's limp exit from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy proved the final straw, with Orient losing 1-0 at the hands of Gillingham.

Speaking to the club's website, Liverani said: “I’m excited about this challenge and cannot wait to get started at Leyton Orient. This is a long term project and we will work together to make it a success.”

Liverani, whose only managerial experience was a seven-game spell at Genoa last year, becomes Orient's fourth manager of the season and brings with him Marcello Donatelli (assistant manager) and Maurizio Cantarelli (fitness coach).

A former central midfielder with Lazio, Fiorentina and Palermo, the 38-year-old retired in 2011 before taking charge of Genoa's Allievi Regionali 'B' squad, eventually stepping up to replace first-team coach Davide Ballardini in 2013.

After just seven games and only one win with the Genoese outfit, Liverani was sacked.

Kevin Nugent and Lee Southernwood will remain on the O's coaching staff despite the new arrivals.

Milanese was initially appointed to the role of sporting director following Francesco Becchetti's takeover of the club, but after losing five of his eight matches in charge of the O's, who are only outside of the League One relegation places on goal difference.
