Orient chief executive Alessandro Angelieri has admitted the club may eventually need to move to a bigger ground if they achieve their target of promotion to the Championship.

New owner Francesco Becchetti wants to take the club to promotion although this looks unlikely to happen this season. But Angelieri believes the O’s can reach their target within the next two seasons and will have to consider the prospect of leaving Brisbane Road, if they go up, because the capacity is limited to 9,241.

Angelieri said: “We are going to get some offers for refurbishments and want to check how much the investment is. The idea is to go into the Championship and if we achieve this next year then probably this stadium is too small so we will have to look at another location to play in a bigger capacity.

“For me there are two solutions. Either we buy this stadium and we do some work to increase the capacity or we move to another stadium if we go into the Championship and we need 15 or 20,000 seats. This is a decision for the president because it is a big investment.”

The chief executive added: “We have to check but the first thing is to help the team to go up the table. If we climb up and have the opportunity to go into the Championship probably we’ll decide in a short time. The president doesn’t talk much and prefers action. When he decides something he goes ahead and is quick.”

Former chairman Barry Hearn remains the owner of the ground although the option remains for Becchetti to buy the Matchroom Stadium. There have also been discussions over selling the naming rights for the ground in the future.

Angelieri said: “We are checking if it is possible to change the name of the stadium. We are speaking about this but no decision has been made whatsoever.

“It is still an option to buy the ground but we have not decided. Barry Hearn asked if we were interested to buy the stadium and it is an option.”

Orient had their lowest home attendance in the league on Boxing Day with just 4,108 fans attending the win over Crawley Town.

But the chief executive has no complaints about the turnouts and hopes improved form on the pitch will help increase their gates.

He said: “Last year I was told the stadium was full some times in League One. If we go into the Championship then probably the fans will increase. I have no experience of this but when I go away I see there are some stadiums which are bigger such as 18 or 20,000 capacity. 9,000 is probably too small for a Championship team.

“Now we have a problem to fill the ground but I’m sure that the more we win the more fans will increase and attendances will go up.

“Proper fans will come whether we’re doing well or badly. Considering where we are in the league we can’t really complain or be unhappy about attendances.

“We are working with the Supporters Trust to try and bring more young fans to the stadium. We have a lot of things in place to try and get more people inside the ground. Considering where we are and all the changes we can’t complain although we can do better.”

The Italian has welcomed the feedback he has received from supporters this season since starting the job last summer. Angelieri accepts the club need to work hard to attract more people to their home games.

He said: “Every day I receive letters from fans. Fifty per cent are unhappy and the other 50 per cent are happy. In football everyone of the fans is manager, president and CEO so it’s difficult to keep everyone happy. But at the stadium we are getting 5,000 to 6,000 and we have to work to increase the fans to support the team. For the players to see the stadium full is a big incentive.”
