Chris Dagnall believes confidence is growing among the Leyton Orient squad after the O's beat Walsall to record back-to-back league wins for just the second time this season.

The 28-year-old rammed in the O's second as Fabio Liverani's men won 2-0 at The Bescot Stadium to move up to 21st, leaving them two points from safety with 14 League One fixtures remaining.

Asked if six points in a week - after a 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic the previous weekend - pointed to a growing confidence within the camp, Dagnall replied: "It is just confidence; we have been playing well in certain games and just not getting the results.

"The lads kept their confidence up and it has showed in three of the last four games. I thought the lads did well against Bradford City but were unlucky not to get the result.

"So I think for the last four games the confidence is starting to pick up a lot more and is really starting to show in the last couple of games."

The former Barnsley forward added: "We have got to prove to ourselves [we can win games] because we do not think we should be where we are in the league and we want to get out of this relegation fight as soon as we can. We are good enough to prove anyone [we can win games] – not just to ourselves."

The first half was far from a classic, though the visitors undoubtedly edged the affair, going close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions against Dean Smith's side.

"I thought in the first half we did very well but we never got the goal we deserved," mused Dagnall. "We came out in the second half, continued to do the same and got two goals in five minutes which killed the game and I’m grateful we got three points.

"We defended brilliantly for the second game on the trot. If we get the goals and keep defending like that I am sure we will pick up a few more wins."

The loan addition of Luke O'Neill from Burnley saw the impressive Gary Sawyer drop to the bench and whilst Dagnall has sympathy with the left-back, he insists it is up to the players to make their case for a starting berth.

Dagnall said: "We have got a lot of defenders now. Gary Sawyer was unlucky not to play today as I think he has been fantastic in the last few weeks. So when the lads come back from injury we have got a big squad and the manager has got a lot of headaches.

"It is going to be tough for the players and there will be a lot of players left out but is up to the players on the pitch to keep hold of their shirt."
