Leyton Orient boss Fabio Liverani apologised to their supporters and took responsibility for their 6-1 thrashing at MK Dons which sent them back into the League One relegation zone.

The O's slumped to their heaviest defeat for 13 years and some of the fans unsurprisingly left early and vented their anger at the team.

Liverani said: "I apologise to the supporters for the performance today and take responsibility for this. But I really hope I will be able to give them joy on Tuesday [at Rochdale] in the most important game of the season so we can restart and plan ahead for the following season."

Orient dropped down to fourth bottom in the table with just three games remaining this season. But the Italian still retains belief his team can avoid relegation despite describing their display as too bad to be true.

Liverani said: "Fair play to MK Dons for playing an excellent game but I thought we were too bad to be true today.

"The hope is from tomorrow we work on the pitch and prepare for the game at Rochdale in the best way we can to produce a very good performance and achieve a good result."

He added: "Saying too bad to be true is referring to today's performance. It's not a general statement. I believe we will avoid relegation otherwise I would have left.

I just wanted to clarify this and again I take responsibility for today but the players and I believe we can avoid relegation. This is what we have to be optimistic for."
