Like many other Orient fans, I travelled to Swindon having already accepted our fate and that it would take something very special for us to get out of it.

My Dad, forever the optimist, had jokingly threatened to kick me out of the car on the way to the game due to my so called pessimism. However by half time, with us 1-0 up and other results seemingly going our way even I briefly believed we might actually be able to pull something out of the bag.

The performance and result that followed in the second half pretty much summed up our season. To throw away a 2-0 lead against a team who had played the majority of the game with ten men, most of whom aren’t even regulars in the Swindon Town side, was inexcusable.

That’s before you even consider the fact that it was a must win game for us whereas our opponents had already secured their play off birth and could’ve been excused for not putting everything into the game.

I don’t think the players are blameless in this situation, far from it, but the lion's share has to lay with Fabio Liverani.

I’ve tried to not get on his back as quickly as perhaps some others have but the performance in the second half on Sunday just topped off the miserable run-in we’ve had and emphasised the fact that he’s simply not good enough to manage our football club.

The performances have been laughable towards the business end of the season, notably since we didn’t manage to get a winner in the second half of the game at Crewe and his post match comments have got more and more bizarre and infuriating as the season has climaxed.

The comment on Sunday about it not being his responsibility to bring in these players particularly bothered me. Obviously he is correct in the fact that he didn’t sign the majority of the squad but to use it as an excuse for our relegation is laughable.

The vast majority of this squad were here last year when we made it to the play-off final, proving that the quality was at his disposal.

For him to take that squad on and not get us out of the bottom four just isn’t good enough. He said himself that we had failed at our objective of avoiding relegation so surely that makes his position untenable?

Sadly, despite all his failures and his obvious lack of experience and skills, I can see him still being our manager come August which worries me. I think we’re set for a big shake-up among the playing staff with potentially only one or two of the out of contract players being here for next season.

I don’t have any faith in Liverani being able to go out and find adequate replacements for the players that will leave and even if he could, would he be able to motivate them or get the best out of them?

It’s particularly frustrating as it seems we have the resources now to go out and sign young, hungry, talented players from our league or the leagues below but the club seems to have no clear transfer strategy.

Insane amounts of money has no doubt been wasted on the players that were brought in at the start of the season, money that would have been better served setting up a good scouting system. I hope I’m wrong but I just have no faith in Liverani or the people above him being able to put a competitive squad together next season.

Regardless of my worries of what might come next season, I’ll be renewing my season ticket when it comes round to it. I love this great football club, no matter who’s in the boardroom, on the touchline or out on the pitch.

Right now I’m just glad the season has finished but I know by the time August comes around I’ll be excited for it to get started again. You never know, they might surprise us all.

Enjoy your summer and up the O’s!
