Orient chief executive Alessandro Angelieri has admitted the club have made mistakes during the first year under new ownership.

It has been a turbulent 12 months under owner Francesco Becchetti with the club now onto their fifth manager since his arrival following last season’s relegation from League One.

The O’s have also been criticised for their poor communication with supporters and Angelieri is the first to admit there have been mistakes over the last year.

Speaking after the appointment of Ian Hendon as head coach, Angelieri said: “The last 12 months has been an experience for us. We did make some mistakes honestly and we don’t want to make the same mistakes next season. We want to make a book and turn the page. We have a new white page to write with a little experience we’ve taken last season and Ian’s our writer.”

Angelieri added: “I read one time in a newspaper an interview from Barry Hearn. He said it took five years to learn about English football when he bought the club. If we have one bad season we have time to do our job and learn better as we go on.

"It’s a new job and new experience. Everybody made some mistakes. Now we have to change and use the mistakes the opposite way to improve our experience.”

Hendon is relatively inexperienced as a manager with just a season in charge of Barnet and several weeks at Dover Athletic five years ago. But Angelieri insists the O’s appointment is not a risk and admits his affection for the club was a key selling point when selecting their replacement for Fabio Liverani.

Angelieri said: “The best quality is probably his approach. He was very interested to show his quality and have a great season with the club that he loves.

“He’s a little different with all the other managers we’ve spoken to. He loves the club. He played here years ago and this is the difference the chairman has taken to choose Ian against the other managers.

“I don’t think it’s a gamble because he has experience at all the levels from League Two to the Premier League. Also he can help us with the experience of the Premier League to work better. For me he’s a good choice for us.”

The Italian has been taken aback by the level of devotion from the O’s supporters and is apologetic about last season after dropping out of the division.

He said: “I’m so sorry for them because for me I’m disappointed about what happened last season. I’m really sorry for them because they are here every match and go away in the cold, rain and bad weather. I went to all the matches and I always saw many people. It’s incredible and very nice.

“They are fantastic and very good for us. They support us and I remember the last game at home against Sheffield United. We had 7,300 people at the stadium which was an amazing situation.

He added: “I’m very happy to speak with the supporters because it’s incredible how they love the club and the history of the club. They are always kind with us and it’s very comfortable to stay with them. We stayed with them at the awards dinner and it was very nice.”

The O's chief executive intends to remain at the club for a second season in London.

Angelieri said: “I hope to stay. I have a rolling contract and have a good relationship with the president. For me it’s a good chance but I work very hard to try our best. It’s not easy because it’s a new job but like all the jobs if you work you make some mistakes. If you don’t work you do not make mistakes.”
