Ian Hendon has confirmed Leyton Orient are keen to sign Peterborough United midfielder Jack Payne but insists the deal has to be right for the club.

Payne travelled out with the O's on their pre-season training camp in Spain and was involved in all three friendly matches. Peterborough are looking to sell the 23-year-old and Orient are keen to bring him to Brisbane Road but head coach Hendon admits the deal is still some way from completion.

Hendon, who worked with Payne at Gillingham, said: "I have known him for a while and he is obviously a very good player. Somehow he has become available and I spoke to Barry Fry (Peterborough director of football) about him. The opportunity came to take him away to Spain. I know he is a good player with a good range of passing.

"We will be having a meeting at the end of the week and if something can be done then we would like to sort it out. But Peterborough will have to meet us on a deal.

"He just fitted in like a glove and you can see his qualities. If the deal can be done then I know he would love to come. He has a good relationship with Andy (Hessenthaler) and I and he ticks all the boxes but it has to be right for the club."

Payne started his career at Gillingham before joining the Posh for a reported £700,000 fee two years ago. The midfielder was made Peterborough captain but the League One club are keen to offload him and he is understood to be keen on moving back towards Kent.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony told the club's YouTube channel: "We've obviously had bids for Jack Payne. We're in negotiations with a club that's out there. Everyone knows he played last night (Thursday).

"Their management team want him and a fee has been provisionally agreed. Now it's up to their Italian director of football to rubber stamp that so we're just waiting for that to happen. If that doesn't happen then there's another club he will go to instead."

With the club hoping to sign Payne, Orient have decided not to make an offer for Concord Rangers midfielder Alex Woodyard. He featured against Braintree, along with former Stevenage striker Francois Zoko, but Hendon will not be signing the pair.

The head coach said: "He (Woodyard) is another in a similar position where we have Lloyd James, Bradley Pritchard and if we get Jack then it doesn't leave much room. I've spoken to him, wished him well but we don't have plans to sign him."

But Dulwich Hamlet defender Frazer Shaw will remain on trial at the club and the O's could be close to signing him.

"He (Shaw) has done well and played in all the games. He has fitted in with everybody and he is still with us."

Dover Athletic defender Connor Essam has also been on trial with Orient but Hendon is still waiting to find out about Shane Lowry's future.

Defender Shane Lowry has a release clause in his contract following the club's relegation and is currently looking for another club

Lowry scored for Birmingham City in their 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday.

The defender has been on trial with the Championship club but has reportedly been offered a two-year deal by Coventry City.

Hendon said: "My hands are tied a bit so I would just like to know sooner rather than later about Shane."
