Ian Hendon admits it is doubtful Kevin Nolan will sign for Leyton Orient despite spending the last week training with the club.

The O’s head coach had refused to rule out the possibility of a shock move for the 33-year-old midfielder if he had not found a new club by the end of the month.

But speaking after Saturday’s draw at Cambridge United, Hendon said: “I very much doubt it [signing Nolan]. I know Kevin from my time at West Ham and he’s a model professional.

“He’s been in training this week and the lads have absolutely loved having him there. It’s been a positive pick-me-up for the lads especially after last week.”

Hendon added: “He sent them a message today wishing them all the best. As I’ve said to Kevin, the president met him the other day at the training ground and tried to put a bit of paper in front of him quickly!

“I think if Kevin had written what he wanted the president might have fallen over! You never know but I’m sure Kevin will have a lot of offers from a lot of clubs.”

Midfielder Jack Payne felt the presence of the former Bolton Wanderers captain at the training ground has proved a boost for the players.

Payne said: “Kevin’s [Nolan] been good. It’s always nice to have experience and he’s played at the top level so even in training you can watch him and see things he does.

“It’s good because he’ll chat to you if you ask any questions.”
