Former West Ham United midfielder Kevin Nolan has emerged as the surprise favourite for the Leyton Orient job.
Nolan is listed as 1/10 favourite with both Sky Bet and Bet Victor to replace Ian Hendon.
Orient tried to sign Nolan at the end of last season and he spent three months training with the club.
But the Guardian Series understands the O's preference remains to appoint an Italian.
Andy Hessenthaler will take charge of the side in the short term but the club are keen to bring in a new manager before the end of the transfer window.
