Leyton Orient have confirmed former West Ham United captain Kevin Nolan as their new player-manager.

The League Two club have moved quickly to replace sacked head coach Ian Hendon and handed Nolan his first opportunity in management with a two and a half year contract.

A club statement said: "Kevin brings with him invaluable expertise and know how, with 17 years’ experience in high level football.

"A number of strong candidates were interviewed by the chairman, but Kevin’s hunger, desire and passion to succeed at Leyton Orient, coupled with his experience, were key in the decision process and the club believe they have the man to take Leyton Orient forward and improve the club's position."

Nolan spent three months training with the O's this season and Orient made him an offer to sign as a player at the end of last year which was turned down.

But owner Francesco Becchetti has decided to turn to the 33-year-old and opted for him over an Italian appointment.

It will be the club's sixth manager under Becchetti with Nolan following in the footsteps of Russell Slade, Kevin Nugent, Mauro Milanese, Fabio Liverani and most recently Hendon.

Former West Ham first-team coach Wally Downes is expected to form part of the new coaching set-up at Brisbane Road.

Nolan takes charge of a side 11th in the table but only three points off the play-offs.

Regardless of his lack of managerial experience, securing Nolan's ability on the pitch is a major coup for the O's with the midfielder playing Europa League and Premier League football at the start of this season.
