New Leyton Orient player-boss Kevin Nolan heaped praise on his players after their 2-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

Nolan took charge of his first game as a manager and second-half goals from Jay Simpson and Calaum Jahraldo-Martin fired the former West Ham United captain to the ideal start.

Nolan said: "It's great and I'm really pleased for the lads, the staff and everyone who has made the transition so easy over the last two days. I've asked to take on a lot in terms of all the training and meetings we've had.

"But I must admit everything we worked on in training worked out well today and hopefully now they've got a bit more belief in me and we can go on and start implementing little things more and more to make sure we get a better side, strive forward and get up that table."

Orient kept their first clean sheet in League Two since October and Nolan admitted improving their defensive solidity was a key priority heading into his first match.

Nolan said: "They haven't had a clean sheet for nearly two months. It seemed if they had to win a game they needed to score more than one goal.

"When you've got a player like Jay Simpson who's top goalscorer in your division I don't think you should be tenth or 11th in the league.

"You should be in the top seven so that's just something I drilled into them that if we keep a clean sheet Jay only needs one chance as you saw today and he will put it away for us."

Simpson celebrated his goal with Nolan's legendary 'chicken dance' and the new manager was delighted with the players' spirit.

He said: "That's the camaraderie [celebration] we've got. It's nice because they still see me as one of the boys but when I stand up and make a speech I've got the room and that's been the most pleasing aspect of it all."
