Leyton Orient have confirmed Kevin Nolan has stepped down as manager but insist he will remain focused entirely on playing until the end of the season.

Assistant manager Andy Hessenthaler has been named as interim boss for the League Two club.

Hessenthaler is likely to be assisted by head of recruitment Rob Gagliardi and academy director Andy Edwards. Goalkeeper coach Lee Harrison is expected to be demoted to the academy.

The O's released a statement claiming Nolan will focus on his playing contribution until the end of the season.

But the Guardian Series understands this is only a short term measure until a pay-off has been agreed with him.

In the statement, Orient chief executive Alessandro Angelieri said: "Everyone at the club is fighting hard to make sure we reach the play-offs this season.

"Whilst that aim remains within reach, we have decided that Kevin should focus entirely on his playing contribution until the end of the season.

"We believe that Kevin will be able to make a bigger impact on the team without the distraction of managerial duties. Andy Hessenthaler, who has been assisting Kevin over the past few months, will take charge of the first team in the interim."

Nolan, who was given only 15 matches in charge, is currently the 3/1 third favourite to become Bolton's next manager.

He spent a decade with the Trotters and helped them qualify for Europe and reach the 2004 League Cup final.
