Gavin Massey plans to help Leyton Orient gain promotion back into League One.

The 23-year-old signed a three-year-deal at E10 for an undisclosed fee from Colchester United yesterday.

The winger, who was born in Watford, played for his home town in 2010-12 and during this spell had loan deals at Wealdstone FC, Yeovil Town and at the U’s.

He told the Leyton Orient website: “What attracted me here was the ambition of the club, and the aim of getting back into League One.

“The club should never be in League Two and will be looking to replicate the season where it nearly went into the championship.

“I can see the ambition from everyone at the club and I want to be part of that.”

Massey made more than 150 appearances for the U’s and during his four-year spell scored 21 goals in the league and also won Players’ Player of the year award in the 2014-15 season.

He contract at Colchester was set to expire at the end of the 2016-17 season as he signed a permanent three-year contract with the Essex based club in 2012 on a free transfer. Massey, who can also play as a forward, scored four goals in 47 games last season as the U’s were relegated from League one.

He is no stranger to Orient, having scored twice against them and he will now join ex-teammate Sean Clohessy.

Massey said he is looking forward to joining the club and is eager to make an instant impact on the pitch.

“It is a new challenge for me and I can’t wait to get going,” he said.

“I first heard of a potential move towards the end of last season, there was a little bit of interest.

“But it wasn’t to be with the season I had with Colchester as we obviously got relegated.

“Every time I have come here to play against Leyton Orient it has always been a good game with great fans and I am looking forward to the start of the season and my aim is for a promotion push.”

A statement on the Colchester United website said they would like to thank Massey for his valuable contribution on and off the pitch at the club and wish him all the best for the future.

The winger is the third signing of new O’s boss Andy Hessenthaler following Robbie Weir and Josh Doherty’s switch to Brisbane Road.
