Leyton Orient captain Robbie Weir feels the squad are determined and ready for a promotion bid this season.

Weir, who helped Burton Albion achieve back-to-back promotions to the Championship before joining Orient, was drawn to the East Londoners because of their ambition.

The 27-year-old was named as captain earlier this month and hopes his experience can guide them into League One.

He said: “I think this squad could definitely get promoted, it is all about the team, the squad, and we have to stick together regardless of even if we are losing a couple or whatever it may be within the season as it is a long old season.

“I think we just have to stick together throughout, and what I have seen in the squad so far, players starting or not, or players coming off the bench, I think there is definitely a positive season ahead.”

Weir is one of the nine summer signings Andy Hessenthaler has made since being named as the O’s permanent manager.

But one aspect the midfielder wanted to stress was the importance of everybody coming together to ensure they are all on the same track.

“People will still be fighting for their positions. August is a busy month and you never know what could happen in August,” he added.

“The starting XI in the first game of the season might not be the same as the next match, with injuries, or people being tired, whatever it may be.

“So it is very important all the lads stick together and are right whenever they are called upon.”

With Paul McCallum enjoying a good scoring run in pre-season, the captain believes while it is important to find the back of the net on a regular basis, it is the whole team performance that matters.

He said: “Some of the lads have already told me Paul scores goals and I have seen that in the last couple of games. He scored at Dagenham and at Woking and it’s very important for us.

“I’ve said before it is a team, we’re a squad and there are no individuals in here. It’s going to be a long season and all the lads need to stick together.

“If you’re not starting the first couple of games of the season, don’t think that’s it – people will get their chance to come on and shine throughout the campaign.”
