Leyton Orient manager Alberto Cavasin feels he has true belief in his side to go on and build momentum after their 3-0 victory over Colchester United.

Jay Simpson gained his first two goals of the season and Nicky Hunt scored his first in four and half years to ensure the O’s took all three points.

Kurtis Guthrie could have pegged the U’s back into the game but failed to capitalise on his opportunities which saw his side slip down the table to 22nd.

“I have faith in them and we have come from a place where he had a run of really bad results,” said the 60-year-old.

“We managed to turn the tables around today. Having these positive reactions and these are all signals for me that we are heading into the right direction.

“I think we are starting to become more like a team otherwise we would not be able to achieve these performances. And this is why I have every faith in them.”

Orient’s performance did not look like a side who were in the bottom two heading into today’s match as the back four worked as a tight knit group to ensure they did not concede.

Taking up a diamond formation worked well for them with Nigel Atangana and Gavin Massey playing as wing backs, helping the strikers and defenders.

Cavasin added: “There is always a reason and there has been many reasons for one thing or another that we did not manage to achieve the right results.

“Today we put in a good performance. We struggled a lot earlier and we know we have to build up momentum to prove we have come out of that difficult situation.

“And to understand what place we need to be in the league table. Our objective was to support our strikers more.

“It seemed to me that this formation could be the solution. A lot of our players have already played in this formation.

“During the week we decided to put this in practice.”

Simpson did not feature at the beginning of the season due to a back injury and struggled to get back in form but looked like his past self on the pitch at the Colchester Community Stadium.

When asked why Simpson had been struggling to produce his 25 goal form from last season the former Sampdoria boss joked: "Jay scored today because I needed to arrive here and train him.

“Because if he had scored a lot before I would not be here. Jay is my friend. My amico.”

The O’s face Blackpool next week with a 3pm kick off at the Matchroom Stadium.
