Leyton Orient boss Andy Edwards believes every game until the end of the season is big for his side.

Since taking over as the full-time boss he has won one and lost two – both defeats coming against sides who are pushing for promotion in Doncaster Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers.

But with two home games over the Christmas period against Crawley Town on Boxing Day and Cambridge United on Saturday, December 31, Edwards believes his side can produce the goods and said: “We said it from the start, we need to get points on the board to try and move away from the relegation zone.

“We have to be realistic in terms of expectation. Obviously, points over the Christmas period are vital.

“It is a big game but it is a cliché, they are all big games and Crawley had a good result and it will be another tough game.

“But I don’t think there is much difference in the teams from top to bottom. If you looked at us against Wycombe it wasn’t the result we wanted, it wasn’t a scintillating performance and we didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked.

“However, if anyone looks at the games that Wycombe have played over the last seven, nobody has done that.

“Wycombe are the form side and we felt it would be a tight game. Maybe it would be a 1-0 result but this time it went against us.”

What was particularly notable in the defeat to the Chairboys was the lack of chances Orient created in the second half.

Gavin Massey appears to be the man of the moment in terms of being able to break down a tight defence but more supply is needed to him for the O’s to start creating more chances.

He said: “We looked at the Accrington game last week when we won 1-0, it is half chances we are creating at the moment, we are not opening teams up, and we have got to be hard to play against.

“Gavin had a bit of joy in the first half, the second half, credit to them, but when you concede four minutes in it gets the crowd up.

“In the first 15 minutes of the game I thought we silenced the crowd and it was a very even game in the first period.

“Second period, you concede four minutes in and we were under pressure for the first 20 and we found it difficult to create chances, they defended well and every team they have come up against in the last seven have found a struggle.

“They have momentum, they have belief, they have a camaraderie, and they have a team that has been built up for four years and a manager who has been there for four years. It was a difficult game and on the balance, they probably deserved the victory.”

Edwards was also asked about the lack of pace in his side when Sandro Semedo is not playing and the manager responded: “We have different players with different attributes. Paul McCallum is our top scorer, Jay Simpson, everyone knows the pedigree he has got.

“Sandro, Jordan Bowery, we have options. It is finding the best combination and the best system.

“But when you are down and confidence is low, we have to be organised and we are trying to give the players that.

“We are trying to give them a belief in what we do. We have got to keep working but it is very hard to develop creativity and confidence.”

Callum Kennedy had to come off during the second half against Wycombe due to a groin problem after he landed awkwardly when making a vital goal-bound clearance.

The 27-year-old’s injury is not as bad as initially feared and it is hoped he could feature against Crawley on Monday.
