Leyton Orient manager Andy Edwards admitted he still needs to speak to president Francesco Becchetti about possible January targets.

The E10 club is light on the ground due to injuries with Robbie Weir joining the likes of Sam Dalby, Sandro Semedo and Teddy Mezague, who all had to come off in matches over the New Year weekend.

Liam Kelly is still out following a torn hamstring and with other League Two clubs strengthening in the window the club will need to bring in some new players.

Edwards said: “We will have to wait and see what happens there. A lot of teams around us are bringing people in and a lot of teams above us are strengthening.

“When you look at us from the start of the season we have no Harry Cornick, Liam Kelly, we have no Jay Simpson and we have a number of players who are unavailable.

“Obviously, we would like to strengthen but if we have to work with what we have got we will have to do that. And I think the players we do have can get us out of the situation we are currently in.

“I keep saying it. We are in a relegation fight, four points above it. At the start of the Exeter game would I have taken that? I am not too sure but at the moment it is reflecting on the performance.

“The performance did not live up to the standard we have set ourselves.”

When asked if anyone had made an approach for Simpson, who asked to leave Brisbane Road last week, Edwards responded: “Not that I know of. Not that I know of, no.”

During the Exeter game, many of the O’s players looked tired and in need of a rest after playing three games in one week.

However, with the side so depleted it will be hard for the former academy director to give any of his charges a break.

“They do need to get rested, like most players across the country they had two games in three days,” said Edwards.

“Exeter were really similar. They changed one or two of their personnel as we did but I thought they showed better energy levels and had more intent and purpose.”

Barnet will be a tough opponent for the O’s this weekend after they beat top-of-the-table Plymouth Argyle 1-0 on Monday.

When asked whether Dalby, Mezague and Semedo will be available for the match and about the transfer window, Edwards said: “We hope so. We just have to see on that one.

“There are specific areas we have looked at where we think we are maybe light or need more competition for places.

“There are areas we have identified but we will have to wait and see what happens.”

The Bees have signed four players since the January transfer window opened and may field a different side to the one Orient played in their 0-0 draw in October.

“I am not sure how many of their new signings played against Plymouth but they have made good additions to their squad on what has been a settled squad for them over the course of the season,” said Edwards.

“It will be a very tough game, they picked up a good result, so it will be a tough one. It is a London derby and we are back at home.

“Hopefully we can continue what has been an upturn in our home form. It was a good point there back in October.

“They have found some great form, they have had the uplift of one or two new players and quality. That always helps.

“We just need to make sure we regroup and refocus on what we are trying to achieve and go again,” the O’s boss added.

One positive about heading back to the Matchroom Stadium is the fact the O’s have gone three games unbeaten since the start of December.

Edwards said: “Seven points out of nine is great but we had, had a good away record.

“It was not the case against Exeter.”

Orient’s match against Barnet kicks off at 3pm before they travel to Fratton Park to face fourth-placed Portsmouth on Saturday, January 14 (3pm kick-off).
