Leyton Orient's local MP has hit out at owner Francesco Becchetti for causing 'mayhem' over an unpaid tax bill believed to be around £250,000.

The E10 club are six points adrift of safety and sit 23rd in the League Two table following a 4-1 loss to Stevenage on Tuesday night.

The club were served a winding up petition by HMRC and are due to appear at the High Court on Monday, March 20.

Becchetti bought the club from former owner Barry Hearn in July 2014 for £4million when they were one spot kick away from a place in the championship.

Since then, they have been relegated from League One, endured nine managerial changes and now face falling out the Football League for the first time in 112-years.

Labour MP John Cryer for Leyton and Wanstead believes the Italians attitude is like many and alluded this to a wider problem in football.

He told the House of Commons: "The local football team in my constituency, Leyton Orient, has been served with a winding up order yesterday.

"The order was served because the owner, who's caused mayhem in two and a half years, and has taken the club right down from actually some of its highest points to some of its lowest - has not paid the HMRC for a number of years.

"Nobody knows exactly how much he owes the HMRC but the rumour is it's about a quarter of a million quid.

"Now we're seeing this sort of pattern in football on a fairly regular basis.

"I think we could do with another statement or debate on the governance of football clubs because we're seeing people of increasingly dubious character buying up football teams in Britain for whatever mendacious reasons they have.

"And I think an awful lot has got to come out about the owner of Leyton Orient."

The Leyton Orient Fan Trust will hold a meeting tonight to discuss setting up a £100,000 fighting fund if the club does enter administration.

Orient face a tough trip away to Newport County on Saturday, who are three points behind the O's with a game in hand.

They will be without winger Gavin Massey after he picked up his 10th yellow card of the season.
