Justin Edinburgh was left to rue his side’s missed chances once again, as the O’s were held to a goalless draw by Eastleigh on Saturday.

The O’s ruthlessness in front of goal has been a cause for concern in recent weeks, with Orient finding it difficult to carve out many clear-cut chances and also struggling to convert any promising opportunities which have come their way.

Substitute Macauley Bonne missed two free headers in the second half at the weekend, while the returning Jobi McAnuff was unfortunate to see a free-kick from the edge of the area strike the crossbar, as Orient returned to Brisbane Road with a point, leaving them eight points clear of the drop zone.

Despite ruing his side’s missed chances, head coach Edinburgh was pleased with the reaction of his players following the disappointing mid-week defeat to Torquay United.

Speaking to Leyton Orient’s website, he said: “Any point away from home is a good one. I think the response from Tuesday was positive. Certainly second half, I thought we were the only team who were going to win. We needed to be a little more clinical in the opposition’s box and then I thought we would have had the three points we would have deserved.”

The O’s were boosted by the return of McAnuff on Saturday, with the veteran winger making his first start for six weeks due to a nerve injury sustained against Dover Athletic in the FA Trophy last month.

McAnuff, who signed a new one-year-deal at the club last month, played 53 minutes for the O’s and Edinburgh was pleased to have the 36-year-old back in contention.

He said: “I think we’ve missed him over the last few weeks. He hasn’t done a lot of training so I knew we’d only get about an hour out of him, which we did. But it’s a big boost for us. Not through his leadership but also because of his qualities on the pitch.

“It was a sublime free kick. It’s just not going for us in front of goal at the minute. It’s not due to lack of effort or wanting, but just that lack of composure and being a little bit more clinical. There’s not a lot more Jobi could have done with that unless it went over the line.”
