James Brophy says the Leyton Orient squad are targeting a strong end to the National League campaign, as they look to build momentum ahead of a promotion push next season.

Brophy played an instrumental role in the 3-0 win over Woking at the weekend, scoring one and winning a penalty, and he gave Cards full-back Matt Young a torrid time all afternoon with some fantastic pieces of skill.

The former Swindon Town man praised the team’s game management after the game and says the O’s are looking to finish the season as strongly as possible.

He said: “I thought we looked quite good today defensively and quite solid. For the goal, it’s one of those ones that drops to the edge of the area, you swing at it and hope the goalkeeper can’t see.

“I thought the game management today was very good. It hasn’t been there in so many games recently. We’ve managed the game much better today and the more goals you get is going to ease a bit of the pressure.

“We need to finish this season on a high which will help us progress into next year. That’s the main aim as we really want to make a challenge next year. For me, it’s pleasing to be playing and to be adding some goals to my game.”

Saturday’s win was Orient’s first at home in 2018, ending a torrid run of home form which saw the club last taste victory on their own turf against Dagenham and Redbridge on Boxing Day.

O’s fans haven’t had much to cheer about at home recently, after the late collapse against Gateshead in the FA Trophy as well as the disappointing defeat to relegation threatened Torquay United, but Brophy said Orient’s poor run of form hasn’t been lingering on the players’ minds.

He said: “I think with it being the international break and there being a huge focus on ticket sales, the attendance and the atmosphere, it was important for the team to give something back to the fans. They’ve been very patient this year as it has been a year of transition. So it was good to give them something back and an insight into how we can play moving forward.”
