Leyton Orient bounced back from their mid-week defeat to Maidenhead United to finish the season in style, as they beat Gateshead 3-1 on the road this afternoon.

Goals from Macauley Bonne, Jobi McAnuff and Josh Koroma secured the win, meaning the O’s gained partial revenge over Steve Watson’s men, who dumped Orient out of the FA Trophy just over a month ago in a replay.

Head coach Justin Edinburgh made two changes to the side which lost to Maidenhead in mid-week, with Charlie Lee making his first start since August in place of Craig Clay, while David Mooney replaced James Brophy, with Koroma moving out wide.

The O’s started brightly and almost took the lead in the third minute, when Koroma’s deflected strike came back off the post, before Bonne’s follow up was superbly saved by Dan Hanford.

Bonne wouldn’t have to wait long to get on the scoresheet, though, as he notched his 25th of the season when he flicked McAnuff’s corner into the back of the net to hand the O’s the lead in the 17th minute.

Back came Gateshead who almost equalised on the stroke of half-time, after a well worked move involving Danny Johnson and Jordan Preston, saw the latter’s effort tipped over the bar by Dean Brill.

But Edinburgh’s men would double their lead just seven minutes after half-time thanks to a superb effort from McAnuff, who latched onto Mooney’s pull-back to rifle the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Seven minutes later and it was three, as Koroma continued his recent good form to notch his third goal in six matches, when his effort found the bottom corner.

Head coach Edinburgh made his one and only change just after the hour mark, with teenager Charles Clayden replacing Charlie Lee for his Orient debut.

A late flurry of chances for Gateshead saw Sam Ling clear Macauley Langstaff’s effort off the line, before Brill pulled off a great stop to keep out Johnson, who would net a late consolation in the 90th minute when he scored from the spot after Ebou Adams fouled Rhys Greenwood.

But that goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation, with the result ensuring Orient secured a 13th place finish in the National League.
