Head coach Justin Edinburgh was delighted with his team’s performance after Leyton Orient’s 3-1 win over Gateshead secured the O’s a 13th place finish in the National League.

Danny Johnson’s late penalty proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Gateshead, as goals from Macauley Bonne, Jobi McAnuff and Josh Koroma sealed a comfortable win for the O’s.

The result meant Orient bounced back in style from their mid-week defeat to Maidenhead United at Brisbane Road and Edinburgh was delighted with the performance of his young team, reserving special praise for Bonne and McAnuff in particular.

Speaking to Leyton Orient’s website, Edinburgh said: “I’m really pleased with the performance. I thought it was a very solid performance from another young team out there again. The players were full of energy, full of enthusiasm and there was some really good play for some long periods of the game.

“There were some top goals there. I’m pleased for Macauley and you look at Jobi once again who was class and his goal typified what he’s been about for me from day one here. We’ve given ourselves a platform to build on now. It’s only a small step, but those boys are hungry now to get back next season and make an impact on this league.”

Orient’s win on the final day of the season secured them a 13th place finish in the National League, capping off a strong end to the campaign which has seen them lose just two of their last eight games.

Edinburgh has certainly turned things around for the O’s since he replaced Steve Davis, with Orient slowly climbing the table and having the best defensive record in the league since his arrival back in November.

After securing a mid-table finish, Edinburgh said he was pleased with the team’s progress, as he now prepares to challenge for promotion next campaign.

He said: “I’ve just said to the players in there that I’ll sleep a lot better than I did after the first game at Solihull Moors. We’ve come a long way since then and we all would have wanted more but it’s been a solid four or five months since I’ve been here. I’m delighted for the fans today. For a 12:30 kick off, to have over 400 fans here is quite incredible so massive credit for their support during the time I’ve been here.”
