Leyton Orient are in no rush to bring in any new signings and will assess the squad during the opening month of the season, according to assistant coach Ross Embleton.

Head coach Justin Edinburgh was previously toying with the idea of bringing in another striker before the O’s trip to Portugal due to Matt Harrold’s injury.

Orient have added two new faces to the squad this summer in the shape of James Alabi and Dale Gorman, but the latter has missed most of pre-season as he recovers from the fractured ankle that he sustained against Coventry City in April.

But with Harrold and Gorman inching closer to full fitness as well as Josh Koroma’s good form during pre-season, assistant coach Embleton says the O’s are prepared to bide their time before they look to bring in any further reinforcements.

Speaking on Monday, Embleton said: “I think being so close to the start of the season, if we were to sign one there’s only five days to go. I think we have to remember that we’re not under that window that shuts immediately, so we’re not stuck for signing players.

“For us, we’ve got to be comfortable with the squad that we’ve got. It’s then about how things settle down in the first little stage of the season. We’ve got players who can play in different positions, Josh Koroma being one of them as you could see him as a centre-forward or winger.

“There’s no need for us to rush as long as we keep everyone fit. At the moment we have one or two coming back. The likes of Dale who suffered an injury and he couldn’t hit the ground running straight away. Matt Harrold will be returning at some stage too. There’s not an immediate need for us to rush.

“It’s important that if you sign another player, with the squad that we’ve got, it’s about getting the right type of person and the right type of character and then the right player that fits into that position. If we were to sign another forward, it would need to be someone who can come in and make an impact.

“If that’s not what we need, then we might need to strengthen in another area of the pitch. But I don’t think there’s an immediate rush, especially bearing in mind when the window closes for us.”

One player who has been linked with an exit from Brisbane Road this summer is star striker Macauley Bonne.

The Zimbabwe international picked up Orient’s Player-of-the-Season award after a hugely successful first campaign in East London, where he finished as the club’s top scorer having notched 25 goals in all competitions.

That form saw him linked with moves to the likes of Shrewsbury Town, Portsmouth and Burton Albion in the Football League as well as Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.

Both Martin Ling and Edinburgh have confirmed to the Guardian Series this summer that the O’s have been in discussions with Bonne about extending his contract at the Breyer Group Stadium and Embleton hopes the striker will remain with the O’s in the long run.

He said: “I think the good thing for me is that I don’t have to get involved in those sort of things. I know Martin and Justin have had different conversations about Macauley’s future.

“Everybody knows about his quality and the type of player and the great season Macauley had last year. We’d be delighted for him to be here longer term but that’s not something I get involved in. I work with him day to day and keep getting him to score more goals.”
