Macauley Bonne’s second half brace wasn’t enough for Leyton Orient, as substitute Raul Correia struck late on to secure Barrow a 2-2 draw at the Breyer Group Stadium.

A disappointing first half saw the O’s trail at half-time thanks to Jack Hindle’s early goal, as the Bluebirds striker peeled off his marker and was allowed time to fire low past Dean Brill.

Bonne notched his first league goal of the season just before the hour mark when he swivelled before firing past Andy Firth and he put the O’s in front with ten minutes remaining when he turned home substitute Josh Koroma’s cross from close range.

But the O’s were pegged back with five minutes remaining as a mistake from Brill saw him fail to collect a long throw and Barrow’s Correia was there to tap home from close range to earn the Cumbrian side a point.

Justin Edinburgh made two changes to the side which was held by Ebbsfleet United at Brisbane Road in mid-week. As expected, Marvin Ekpiteta came in for the injured George Elokobi in defence for his first start of the season, while in midfield, Charlie Lee replaced Alex Lawless who dropped to the bench.

Meanwhile, Barrow boss Ian Evatt made just one change to the side which lost to Halifax Town in mid-week, with West Bromwich Albion loanee Kyle Jameson coming in for his debut at the back in place of the injured Brian Wilson.

It was the visitors, who recorded a 3-0 win over Havant and Waterlooville on the opening day of the season, who almost took the lead within 90 seconds as Barrow’s Luke Kay was first to a loose ball and unleashed an effort from 20-yards which just clipped the top of the bar.

Orient didn’t heed that warning as Barrow deservedly took the lead a minute later after a well-worked team move. It was poor defending from Orient in truth, as Ian Evatt’s men were allowed time and space to string together a few passes, before the ball was played into Hindle, who got away from Lee before firing across Brill and into the back of the net to notch his third goal of the season.

Barrow were enjoying too much freedom in the middle of the pitch and they almost added a second moments later. Craig Clay dwelt too long on the ball and his pass was closed down allowing Hindle to break and his cross almost made its way through to Smith, but Josh Coulson was there to make the block.

Orient were looking increasingly nervous at the back in the opening moments of the game, failing to deal with the Barrow front three’s movement and the visitors created another chance when Dan Jones’ short throw was worked to Kay who curled wide from distance.

After the Bluebirds were forced into an early change, with the injured Rhys Turner being replaced by Nathan Waterston, Justin Edinburgh’s men slowly started to work their way back into the game and the O’s almost got back on level terms when Jobi McAnuff worked a decent opportunity for himself, cutting in from the left before hitting a low strike from 20-yards which flew just wide of the post.

Down the other end, Brill was then forced into a comfortable save from Rooney’s clipped effort, before Barrow’s Firth was tested for the first time, when he was forced into action to deny Lee’s header from an in-swinging McAnuff free-kick after Brophy had been brought down near the dug-out.

Orient started the second half much brighter and they would have been back on level terms seven minutes after the re-start had it not been for a superb save from Firth. Having initially lost possession, Lee won the ball and passed it to Coulson, who played in McAnuff and the Orient skipper’s low cross was met by Bonne at the far post, only for his close-range effort to be brilliantly saved by Firth.

But Bonne wouldn’t have to wait long to notch his first goal of the season, as he got Orient back on level terms from the following throw-in. After a long stoppage to allow treatment for Barrow goalkeeper Firth, Lee launched a long throw which was met by Couslon and Bonne turned his man, before hitting a low effort into the back of the net.

Barrow were calling for a penalty down the other end, when Waterston went down under pressure inside the area and from the resultant corner, the Bluebirds almost retook the lead, but the unmarked Jones could only nod wide at the far post.

The Cumbrian side had another good opportunity seconds later when they capitalised on Ekpiteta’s failed clearance and the ball found its way to substitute Waterston, who forced Brill into a good save.

Edinburgh made his first change with 25 minutes remaining, as Josh Koroma replaced Alabi up top, and that substitution almost paid dividends in a matter of seconds, when the youngster’s close range header from McAnuff’s corner was cleared away.

Orient came close again seconds later as a McAnuff corner caused problems for Barrow once again and Coulson rose highest, but his header cleared the bar.

Both managers decided to make changes with 20 minutes remaining as they tried to go for the win, with James Dayton replacing Lee and Wigan loanee Luke Carroll-Burgess replacing Kay for Barrow.

Having notched his first goal of the season, Bonne was in a bullish mood and he tried his luck from 20-yards after turning away from his marker from Widdowson’s throw, but his effort was too close to Firth.

Barrow were struggling to pick up some of Bonne’s intelligent runs and last season’s top scorer made them pay when he put the O’s in front for the first time with ten minutes remaining.

Koroma beat the offside trap to bring down Sam Ling’s long ball forward and the Orient youngster raced into the penalty box before squaring for Bonne, who calmly tapped home at the far post to hand Edinburgh’s men the lead.

But having taken the lead, Orient would undo all their hard work within five minutes, as Brill failed to collect a long throw in from Jones and substitute Correia poked into an empty net to get Barrow back on level terms.

Back came Orient though and after a free-kick was only partially cleared, McAnuff picked up the ball before playing in Ekpiteta, whose angled drive was straight at Firth.

But as the clock ticked towards the 90 minute mark, neither team really created any further clear cut chances and after five minutes of added time, the referee brought the game to an end, condemning Orient to their third draw of the season.
