Leyton Orient skipper Jobi McAnuff believes it’s important the O’s beat the teams around them in the table, as they gear up to take on Boreham Wood this afternoon.

Luke Garrard’s men were one of the National League’s surprise packages last season, with the Wood just missing out on promotion to League 2 after losing 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers in the Play Off final at Wembley in May.

The Hertfordshire side picked up three points in their opening match of the season against Dagenham and Redbridge, but are without a win in three having been held by Gateshead at Meadow Park on Tuesday night thanks to Steven Rigg’s late equaliser.

The Wood lost key players Bruno Andrade, Morgan Ferrier and Grant Smith over the summer to Football League outfits, but are still expected be in the mix for promotion this campaign.

Orient, meanwhile, will be hoping to record their first home victory of the season, having been held by both Ebbsfleet United and Barrow at the Breyer Group Stadium so far.

However, the O’s will be brimming with confidence after securing their first win of the campaign against Maidstone United in mid-week thanks to goals from Josh Koroma and Marvin Ekpiteta.

Morale will also be high among the squad after star striker Macauley Bonne gave the East London side a major boost by signing an improved two-year deal at Brisbane Road earlier this week.

McAnuff, who missed the mid-week game against Maidstone due to a knock, could return for the O’s today and feels it is important that Orient pick up three points against their promotion rivals.

The 36-year-old said: “They are all tough games. We’ve had a tough start but once again, we don’t want to lose any games, particularly to teams who are going to be in and around us. Once the season settles down a little bit, then I think things will start to balance themselves out a little bit. Hopefully our quality and our strength will come through.”
