Newcastle brought a galaxy of stars to Brisbane Road on Saturday, but they were totally eclipsed by a barn-storming performance from Orient's players, which can only raise hopes for the season ahead.

Boss Geraint Williams fielded a full strength side, and on 52 minutes four members of it combined to produce what could be a very early candidate for the goal of the season.

Ryan Jarvis, Jason Demetriou and Stephen Purches played sumptuous passes to progress speedily up the field, by-passing the massed ranks of the Magpies midfield and defence.

Then skipper Purches floated in a cross. Scott McGleish got in position and executed an overhead kick on the 18 yard line. His shot went straight in the far corner of the net for Orient's third.

It was a phase straight off the training ground and sure to please Williams, who will be much pleased with this performance.

Earlier, new boy Jimmy Smith had temporarily silenced the vocal travelling Geordies with the opening goal, early in the match.

With just five minutes gone, he stroked home Sean Thornton's in-swinging free kick from the left side.

The former Sunderland man had been floored by Tyneside's own bad boy, Joey Barton, soon after dispossessing Barton close to Orient's area.

The tangle left Barton's shirt shredded.

Barton was roundly booed by O's fans from kick-off, and the Newcastle had their own hate-figure in Thornton.

Soon after, the Irishman extended Orient's advantage from the penalty spot on 23 minutes, after Patulea had hassled Habib Beye into handling the ball just inside the area.

For the whole first half Orient never sat back, Williams' side played a passing game on the grass. Often, Jones rolled the ball out of his area instead of punting it far up-field.

James Scowcroft was an imposing target-man, and Adrian Patulea was very lively and a constant thorn in the side of the last defender.

But with so many players with Premier League pedigree, and Fabricio Coloccini, Newcastle's threat was ever present. The visitors cut through Orient's backline and created several scoring chances.

Jamie Jones in goal produced a litany of fine saves to deny Kevin Nolan on 14 minutes and later Damien Duff on 43 minutes, both at close range. He also pulled out the stops to palm away Nolan's 25 yard snap shot in the 39th with a fine high, diving save.

But he was helpless against Barton's penalty kick on the half hour mark, after Mkandawire had clumsily felled Martins. It was Newcastle's sole strike. Jones was replaced at half time by Glenn Morris as Williams rotated most of the side to give youngsters a run-out.

Throughout, Newcastle huffed and puffed to little effect. They seemed to lose their appetite as the game wore on.

Orient on the other hand always pushed and they reaped the benefits. Mkandawire shot from point-blank range made it four, from Demetriou's corner.

Then Jarvis made it five with a goal of considerable class.

On 82 minutes, his deft second touch, after he initially mis-controlled sub Harry Baker's raking pass, put him on a course for the goal from 30 yards out.

Under pressure from behind and from the on-rushing keeper, he curved his shot round and into the far corner of the net.

Even then, Orient had more to offer against a flagging opponents.

They did just what the fans were chanting for and scored a sixth.

Substitute Harry Baker was in the right place to rifle home Loick Pires' driven ball close to the touch line.

Final score 6-1. The O's players left to a storm of applause.

This performance and the result felt more significant than a typical pre-season match. Bring on Bristol Rovers.
