Orient boss Russell Slade insists results are irrelevant during pre-season after his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Conference Premier side Dartford in their latest warm-up match.

The O's were also beaten by Blue Square Premier outfit Ebbsfleet United in their previous game. But Slade is unconcerned by the losses and is just focused on making sure his team are ready for the season opener against Charlton Athletic on August 14.

Slade said: “I didn’t get carried away when we beat Wolves so I won’t get worried now that we’ve lost to Dartford. I don’t think the results mean anything at this stage.

“We only lost one game last pre-season and then we had two wins in the first 14 games. The year Brighton went up they only won once in pre-season. So it’s just about fitness and being ready for the main event.

“We will certainly be looking to do an awful lot better than our finishing position from last season. We are hoping that we’ll be far closer to what we managed to do in the season before.”

Orient have brought in seven signings already this summer but the manager admitted he is unlikely to be able to add to the squad unless he manages to offload some of his players.

Slade said: “We would like to do more but we’re not in a position do that. Everybody is controlled by the budget and if we want to bring in anyone else then we will have to wheel and deal. It won’t be the biggest squad in the world.”

Leyton Orient continue their preparation for the new season with a trip to Luton Town this weekend. Slade's side take on the Hatters and the manager will be expecting his team to sharpen their fitness and skill levels at Kenilworth Road. Their final friendly is on Wednesday night when they visit Maidstone United.

He added: “We are pretty much on course and trying to reduce injuries to a minimum. The next two weeks are important in terms of getting sharper but the base level of fitness is there.

“We are progressing and hopefully by 5 o’clock on Saturday we’ll be in a better position and closer to getting ready for the season. It’s another stepping stone in the build-up to the new season.”
