Fabio Liverani believes Orient need another 20 points to avoid relegation and insists he is not concerned about the results of his closest rivals.

The O’s remain second bottom in League One despite a much-needed 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Victories for Colchester United and Crawley Town ensured Orient did not make significant ground on most of the other teams battling to avoid the drop.

Orient have 32 points from 31 games and their Italian manager believes the club will need to reach 52 to avoid dropping down to League Two.

Liverani, speaking via a translator, said: “We need 20 points to avoid relegation and cannot worry about the other teams involved. We have to win games home and away to achieve this goal.”

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak made an important contribution with his penalty save and Liverani hopes the club are able to extend his loan from Burnley until the end of the season.

He said: “Cisak is a goalkeeper that we chose out of many we were considering because we wanted a keeper with these characteristics. He’s doing well and hopefully he’ll keep doing well for the rest of the season.

“It’s too soon to be talking about plans for the future. We have to think about avoiding relegation first so in terms of planning moves for players it’s too soon. But it is our intention to extend the loan spell but it’s not just down to us. It’s down to the player and the club he belongs to.”

The O’s were boosted by the availablity of Andrea Dossena, Jay Simpson and Jobi McAnuff and all three made a significant contribution during Saturday’s victory.

Liverani said: “Simpson is yet another player we recovered from injury. To give you an example, not making excuses but the first day I arrived at the club we had 15 injured players. It’s almost impossible to work with 15 injured players so now we are slowly recovering these players and the future is looking brighter.”

He added: “McAnuff is a player with ability. He’s a very important player on the pitch but also in the changing room. Unfortunately when I arrived he’d just come back from international duty and got an ankle injury so he never really could train properly for a long time. Now he’s back to full training and he played 60 minutes to his maximum standard. This is what I asked of him and I’m pleased with his performance.”

When asked about Dossena’s contribution, he replied: “He is a highly rated player. There were moments in the season where he was not fit or I decided to pick someone else but today he had a big desire to play this game and played very well. He’s a player that when he’s fit his qualities and ability are not questionable.”
