Former Leyton Orient assistant and interim manager Kevin Nugent has joined Charlton Athletic as Russell Slade’s number two.

The 47-year-old, who worked alongside Slade during a very successful four-year spell at the O’s, joins the Addicks from Luton Townm, where he was working as a first-team coach.

Nugent, who began his playing career with the O’s making 94 league appearances and scoring 20 goals told the club website it was a fantastic club to join.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“I’ve left another fantastic club but when the opportunity arose to join Charlton, a club with such history and tradition, I wanted to grab it with both hands.

“I’ve worked with Russell before and with the situation we find ourselves in at the moment I know that there is no-one better to try and take us back into the championship.”

Nugent joined Plymouth Argyle from Orient and spend three years in Cornwall before switching to Bristol City and then Cardiff City.

In 2002, he rejoined Orient once again and made the final move of his playing career when he switched to Swansea.

He worked as assistant manager to Kenny Jackett at Swansea where he began his coaching career and in 2007 he returned to E10 for the second time.

He remained at Orient until early this year before he joined Nathan Jones’ coaching staff at Luton.

Addicks boss Slade told the club website he was looking for the ideal candidate.

He added: “It was important that we got the right man and we have managed to prise Kevin out of Luton, and that is extremely pleasing.

“I have worked with Kevin before, he knows what is required, he knows this level really well and between Kevin and Simon Clark I think we have two really capable coaches that will only help to make us a better team.”
