Andy Hessenthaler believes his side can take confidence from their 0-0 draw with Charlton in their pre-season friendly.

Orient managed to keep a clean sheet against the League One side and Dean Cox provided the best chance of the game as his volley in the 81st minute went just wide of the post.

Hessenthaler named Robbie Weir his first team captain ahead of the 2016/17 season and the 50-year-old is delighted with the midfielder and his footballing talent.

He said: “Weir is a confident footballer, he has played in League One and that is the reason we identified him to come to this football club.

“He had a good game today along with quite a lot of them and we have good competition for places.

“We have Sammy Moore and Nigel Atangana chomping at the bit as well to get on the pitch and they came on and carried the good work on in midfield.

“It was pleasing, we are building a squad, there is good competition for places and some weren’t particularly happy today as they wanted to play more minutes it is a good sign.

“They are hungry to do well and hungry to play and the closer we get to Cheltenham I am sure there will be a few more disappointed people.

“But I have to pick the right team to go to Cheltenham on August 6 but it is what I want as we need competition for places.”

As the O’s have been working on their set plays and their defensive work, Hessenthaler believes keeping clean sheets is key to gaining promotion.

He added: “You win leagues by keeping clean sheets and you get promoted by doing that. That is something we really need to focus on.

“Because I think we have strikers at the club to score, we have good options and every time we keep that back door shut I think we will always create chances.

“If we end up going away from home and winning 1-0 and we kept it tight and had two or three chances and you take one of those and you come away from Cheltenham hopefully with a 1-0 win we will be absolutely delighted.

“It is good to have the two clean sheets (in pre-season) but that is going to be important all season.”

The O’s will travel to Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday kicking off at 7.45pm for their fifth UK pre-season friendly.
