Manager Russell Slade admits Leyton Orient may have to play a waiting game this summer as they look to strengthen their squad.

From August, League One clubs will only be able to spend 60 per cent of their revenue on wages, which is a five per cent reduction on this season.

Orient will have to manage these new restrictions accordingly and Slade anticipates this will result in more transfers taking place towards the end of the summer.

The O’s boss said: “The regulations are obviously restrictive. I think on top of that, a lot of players will find themselves temporarily out of work.

“Having gone to the League Managers Association (LMA) dinner, I think there will be a lot of managers keeping their powder dry until later on in July. Players will have to be realistic and look at what is available.

“It is a bit of a waiting game and there could be a snowball effect later in the summer.

“I think more business will be done later on this summer,” the O’s boss continued.

Slade, who is close to agreeing a new contract with striker David Mooney, “We just want to get the nucleus of our team together and if we can get David and Romain Vincelot signed then we will have a strong 12 or 13 players here. Then we can maybe just hang fire if we have to.”

Orient released six players including Martin Rowlands and Lee Cook last month, with their contracts coming to an end, but there were suggestions they could still possibly earn deals at Brisbane Road. However, Slade insists there has been no contact with them so far this summer.

Regarding the released players, he replied: “Very little has happened and nothing much has changed.

“When things move on again we can have another look at it.”

After the departure of Lee Butcher, the O’s only have one goalkeeper at the club and the manager has targeted bringing in an additional young back-up stopper.

Slade said: “I’m hoping to bring in some new faces and I’m talking to certain players. I want to strengthen in midfield and up front.

“At this moment in time, we only have one goalkeeper so we’re also looking to bring in a young second choice keeper.”

Shaun Batt enjoyed a successful loan spell at Orient during the second half of last season.

The powerful forward is out of contract at Millwall this summer but the Championship club are believed to have offered him a new deal.

Slade, who has expressed an interest in him, said: “I’m led to believe that Shaun has been offered a contract at Millwall and I think he is chewing that over.

“We will monitor the situation but if he decides to stay at Millwall then it rules us out.

“If he doesn’t then it could be quite competitive at League One level for him. There is a lot of water under the bridge.”
