Orient's Adam Chambers and Jason Demetriou look to win the ariel battle at Carlilse

Carlisle United 1
Leyton Orient 0
(League One)

A BUNGLE by the match officials not for the first time this season saw Orient robbed on the road.

The O's despite finding themselves under a sea of pressure in the opening periods of the first half, had a perfectly good goal from JJ Melligan ruled out by ref Scott Matthieson on 43 minutes.

The winger had beat team-mate Adam Chambers to the ball to head home Charlie Daniels cross from the left after home keeper Keiren Westwood had flapped at the ball. At first Matthieson awarded the goal, before a linesman's flag saw him change his mind. And to rub insult into injury Carlisle took maximum points with a second half strike from red-hot forward Joe Garner.

A fuming Martin Ling said: "There was no foul and the ref had the best view of the incident.

"The linesman was twice as far away as him to the ball, yet he has let himself be over-ruled.

"The goal wasn't given because Adam Chambers was suppose to have fouled the keeper, but he just mistimed his jump."

Carlisle had dominated the opening period with a string of chance, the first arriving in the fourth minute.

Adam Chambers fouled Joe Garner on the left-hand edge of the box. But Mark Bridge-Wilkinson fired the resulting free-kick well over on four minutes.

Bridge-Wilkinson almost found his range on ten minutes, though, after a foul by Alton Thelwell presented him with another free-kick in a similar position. This time his effort however shaved the outside of the left upright.

Despite some nice exchanges by the visitors, they still couldn't carve out any clear openings and is was the Cumbrians who were next to go close on 13 minutes.

Garner brilliantly controlled Chris Lumsdon's cross field ball before firing in a low effort that Glenn Morris got down well to save.

The hosts continued to carve out the better openings and Thelwell showed real bravery to get in the way to block an effort from Joe Anyinsah.

Bridge-Wilkinson then put another dangerous looking ball into the box, but Garner got his header all wrong and missed the target by a mile.

Carlisle must have thought they had broken the deadlock on 31 minutes after the O's struggled to clear Bridge-Wilkinson's corner. That allowed the home midfielder to put the ball back into the danger area, but Danny Carlton's snap shot smashed into the side netting.

The visitors with their first effort of the half came within a whisker of taking the lead two minutes later. A neat interchange by Adam Chambers and Adam Boyd, saw the former thread the ball through to Jabo Ibehre, but Keiren Westwood saved well from the striker.

Carlton then found time in the Londoners area to turn and shoot, but he fired wide when really he should have hit the target.

Ibehre again went close for the visitors on 37 minutes, when his driving run from just inside the home half saw him fire narrowly over.

Carlisle broke down the other end and Joe Anyinsah found himself in plenty of space in the Orient box, but a poor touch allowed Tamika Mkandawire to get back and produce an excellent block.

The big talking point of the half arrived two minutes before the interval, when the O's looked to have taken the lead, when Melligan wrongly had his header chalked off.

Finishing the opening 45 minutes the stronger Orient again almost took the lead right on the stroke of half time. Daniels corner again caused trouble in the hosts area, but Mkandawire's glancing header skimmed the top of the net.

Ling's men created the first chance of the second half in the opening 60 seconds when Chambers crossed, but Boyd head well wide.

At the other end Thelwell did well to scoop over a dangerous looking cross from Anyinsah. But from Bridge-Wilkinson's resulting corner on 50 minutes, Garner broke free from Thelwell to smash home from close range.

Carlisle almost doubled their lead on 59 minutes, when Carlton broke down the right and cut it back for Garner but he shot wide from inside the six-yard box.

Richard Keogh then fired over a Bridge-Wilkinson corner on 68 minutes.

Sub Wayne Corden then sent over a cross from the left on 70 minutes, but Boyd headed well wide.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser and Boyd was unlucky to see an effort deflected over on 83 minutes, after latching onto a Ibehre flick on.

From the resulting corner Mkandawire rose highest in the Carlisle box, but he couldn't hit the target from Daniels' flag kick.

The O's almost levelled on the stroke of full-time, when Boyd picked up Efe Echanomi's flick on and almost caught Westwood off his line with a dipping volley that only just cleared the home bar.

Then deep into stoppage time Daniels let fly with a shot from range that luckily for Westwood deflected straight into his arms off a defender in front of him.

ORIENT: Morris; Purches, Mkandawire, Thelwell, Daniels; Melligan (Barcham 81), Terry, Chambers, Demetriou (Corden 69); Boyd, Ibehre (Echanomi 87). Unused: Saah, Palmer
