Woodford Green with Essex Ladies’ Tiffany Porter beat off world-class opposition to come third in the 100m hurdles in the Diamond League in Birmingham on Sunday.

Porter recorded a season’s best time of 12.72 which saw her finish ahead of London Olympics gold medallist and reigning World champion Sally Pearson.

In front of Porter was Kellie Wells in second and winner Dawn Harper-Nelson, both from the USA.

Elsewhere, Woodford’s senior athletes were in action at the Watford British Milers’ Club Grand Prix, where among some good results Tom Phillips achieved a personal best in the C 1500m.

Phillips’ time of 3.48.58 was enough for fourth place in windy conditions.

Alex Cornwell went faster in the A race, but was left a little disappointed with his 3.45.11 for eighth.

Having finished second in the recent Under-23 trials race, Cornwell was hoping to achieve the 3.42.00 needed for European Under-23 Championships selection.

Fastest of Woodford’s 800m men was Jon Cook, but he too was disappointed with his 1.49.96 which saw him finish fifth in the A race.

Under-20 athlete Matt McLaughlin made his mark in the C 800m, running a season’s best of 1.50.55 to win the event.

In the D race, Jordan Donnelly cast aside some jet-lag from a trip to the Far East to register a season’s best of 1.51.65 to come fourth.

In the women’s 800m races, Tara Bird finished fourth in the A with 2.05.50, while Megan Edwards was also fourth in the B with 2.08.09 and in the C race Emily Moss came fifth with a season’s best of 2.12.80.

Competing at Copthall on Saturday at the LICC meeting, Youcef Zatat produced two good performances with the junior implements, winning the shot with 17.20m and placing second in the discus with 52.46m. The latter effort improved his own Woodford club record in the process.

Other LICC results included an Under-20 hammer mark of 60.80m for Harry Clarke and 40.61m in the discus for Hollie Redman.

Twelve-year-old Molly Gardner struck gold again at the East of England Championships at Cambridge in the Under-13 girls 200m.

In the heats Gardner ran a personal best of 28.34, winning comfortably, while in the final she recovered from a bad start to come through strongly in the home straight to take gold with a time of 28.69.
