The prestigious Roberts Challenge Cup final went to the 35th hole before Stephen Bland triumphed by 2&1 over Simon Ironside at Woodford Golf Club on Sunday.

Bland, who plays off a 19 handicap, mastered his short game – chipping well and putting superbly – against the long-hitting South Woodford man.

Ironside, who plays off a handicap of 15, hit the ball long distances off the tee with a 7-iron on a blustery but dry day.

Meanwhile, Mark Rowley and Mark Deeming defeated Aiden Steed and Paul Evans at the 20th hole in the Stephenson Trophy four-ball better ball competition final.

After being three down at the turn, Steed and Evans recovered their momentum and could have captured the trophy if Evans had sunk a 2ft putt on the 18th.

He missed so the match went on to the 20th where Rowley and Deeming prevailed.

Club champion Michael Everitt captured the November medal at Woodford on Saturday with a stableford score of 39 points.

This was two ahead of newly-promoted Division One player Paul Morley (14 handicap), who finished runner-up on a count-back with Mark Bonham (13 handicap). Both scored 37 points.

There was also a count-back in Division Two where 17-handicap Terry Chisholm just prevailed over Michael Jones, both on 35 points.

This was the last medal of the 2013 golfing year in which five-handicap Everitt won the overall Order of Merit and also topped the Eclectic table which collates the best results of each player on each hole in qualifying competitions to give a computerised ‘dream’ gross score.

Anthony Weaver romped home in the seniors’ section October medal last week when he racked up a score of 40 stableford points over 18 holes.

Runner-up five points adrift was Tom Steed. Weaver also won the Poly pot prize for the best front nine with a score of 18 points.
