Richard Commey says winning the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title on Saturday would ‘mean the world’ to him, in what will be just his fourth fight in the UK.

The unbeaten 27-year-old, who lives in Epping and trains at the Pro SW Gym in Loughton, takes on Gary Buckland (28-4 9 KOs) for the Commonwealth lightweight title at York Hall on Saturday evening.

Commey (17-0 17 KOs) is already the champion of Ghana, the current IBF Africa Continental champion and the current ABU Lightweight Champion.

“It means the whole world to me; if I really want to be where I want to be, world champion, it really means a lot. It’s a big step up for me and it means a lot, not just for me but for the entire nation of Ghana,” explained Commey.

“It would be a great thing for me and a great step up for me because I’ve been training hard and since I came over here, for the last seven months I’ve been training hard for this show.”

Commey had been scheduled to take on Derry Matthews for the Commonwealth lightweight title in March but the fight fell through, forcing the boxer to wait another four months for his first Commonwealth title fight and his first bout of 2014.

“Yes, [it was frustrating], it’s been an issue since I’ve been in boxing,” admitted Commey, who lives with trainer Carl Lokko and manager Michael Amoo-Bediako.

“You understand that we move on from there. Ever since then I’ve been training every day and it really doesn’t matter.

“I’m very excited; I’ve got the Commonwealth fight. It’s in the past now and only God knows why it happened this way,” added a philosophical Commey.

Buckland, 28 and from Cardiff, has lost two of his last three fights – his first defeats since 2007 – and Commey remains confident ahead of the sold-out show.

“I know he’s a comfortable fighter and he always tries to fight. I’ve seen a couple of his fights, he’s a good guy and he’s been there [and done that] but we’ve got a plan to win,” stated Commey.

“I let the coach worry about that [the strategy for the fight] and focus on what I have to do and what he asks me to do,” he added.

The fight is part of the ‘Azonto Time’ show put on by Goodwin Promotions, which will be also be available to stream online at www.boxingevolution.tv from 7pm.
