Epping Upper Clapton RFC began life under their new name with a 74-4 demolition of Pegasus Palmerians in their first Essex and Canterbury League One clash on Saturday.

Upper Clapton RFC have been located in Epping for 80 years and with the support of the community and Epping Forest District Council, the club’s 80-year-old club house is due to be demolished next summer, with a new one set to be constructed in time for the 2015/16 season.

A brand-new all-weather pitch has been completed and is being used by Epping Youth Football Club and the rugby club for training, whilst a multi-sport games area is already being utilised by Epping Upper Clapton Netball Club.

In recognition of the support shown and the club having received authority from the Rugby Football Union, it has changed its name to Epping Upper Clapton RFC.

On Saturday, Epping UCRFC played their first league fixture under the new name, bringing to an end the name that has stood since 1879.

John Stockdill, a stalwart of the club for many years, presented the new shirts to the first team and more than 80 supporters gathered to watch the club’s stunning opening-day victory.
