An 88th-minute winner saw Redbridge exit the Ryman League Cup second round at the hands of Cheshunt on Tuesday evening following a 2-1 defeat.

The Motormen had looked set to force a penalty shoot-out, with extra-time not allowed under the competition rules, but instead Cheshunt found the extra gear and sealed their place in round three.

Redbridge and Cheshunt had met as recently as three weeks ago, with Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s side coming from 3-0 down to win 5-3 with just 11 minutes left on the clock.

On this occasion a string of early corners failed to yield a goal for Redbridge whilst Cheshunt came closest when Allen Bossmann picked out Josh Fagbohun who subsequently missed the target.

Hosts Redbridge did take the lead in the 37th minute.

George Winn cut in from the left and fired an unstoppable 25-yard effort past Cheshunt goalkeeper Glenn Williamson to score his first goal for the club After the break the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, coming close when a header hit the crossbar and keeper Jack Avery pushed over another effort destined for the net.

With 11 minutes remaining Cheshunt did level, with the goalscorer’s identity unclear in a goalmouth scramble.

Nine minutes after getting back on terms, the visitors ensured there would be no spot-kicks when Adam Bolle reacted quickest to net following Avery’s initial save.

Waltham Abbey were unable to make the most of their numerical advantage on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Chatham Town.

The Chats had been on top before they were reduced to ten men in the 67th minute and were left to rue their profligacy in front of goal.

Joe Loft went closest for the hosts when he saw his effort cleared off the line, with Abbotts goalkeeper James May already beaten.

Loft and Owen Kabodi both had shots saved by May, with Anthony Carlton and Kane Philips shooting wide of the target when presented with good opportunities.

The game followed a similar pattern in the second half until Lewis Knight was dismissed in the 67th minute.

From there Paul Wickenden’s side saw more of the ball and looked a greater threat, but were unable to trouble the Chatham backline as the game petered out.
