Sam Allardyce is concerned playing with nine men against Southampton will impact upon West Ham United’s performance against West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday (12.45pm kick off).

The Hammers played out an energy-sapping 0-0 draw against Southampton on Wednesday and an injury to Andy Carroll, as well as a red card for goalkeeper Adrian effectively left them with nine men in the closing stages of the game.

West Ham won 2-0 the last time they met the Baggies in the FA Cup back in 1993 but Allardyce is worried that the exertion of his players in the Saints game might affect them this weekend.

“My fear is unfortunately that the extra effort we have put in with nine men will maybe take its toll when we play against West Brom," he told the club website.

The Hammers will play a revitalised Albion side, who under new head coach Tony Pulis have only lost once in five matches.

Pulis oversaw the 1-1 draw between the two sides at the beginning of January and a win in the cup will swing the head to head record in their favour which currently reads as 38 wins each.

The injuries have mounted for Allardyce and he will be without the services of Guy Demel, James Collins and Winston Reid while Carroll has been ruled out for three weeks after aggravating a knee injury.

Midfield duo Kevin Noble and Mark Noble are also doubts for the trip to The Hawthorns.

Allardyce said: "I can only hope that Kevin and Mark are fit. I think it will come just too soon for James Collins and Reid, so we'll just have to assess and hope that nothing untoward has happened when they come in on Thursday. A little strain on a Wednesday night will keep them out on Saturday.”

Pulis’ side have two injured players in Youssouf Mulumbu and Jonas Olsson, while Victor Anichebe will have a late fitness test to determine whether he will be eligible to play.
