Waltham Abbey were unable to build on Saturday’s victory against Barkingside on Tuesday night as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Dereham Town in the Isthmian Division One North.

The visitors went in front after 26 minutes when Luke Tuttle caught the Abbotts defence napping and stole in to shoot across Jayden Purdue.

Tutle then doubled Dereham’s lead in the 67th minute. Jason Hallett halved the deficit with 13 minutes remaining but Abbey could not force an equaliser.

Hallett scored four as the Abbotts picked up a much-needed first win in four on Saturday as they thrashed Barkingside 5-0 to move up to 13th.

Bad traffic in the area caused one of the assistant referees to arrive late and, as a result, the fixture kicked off ten minutes late.

But the delay did not bother Paul Wickenden’s side, who took the lead after just eight minutes through Hallet, who headed home unmarked just minutes after going close with a stinging drive from 25 yards.

East London and West Essex Guardian Series:

It was soon 2-0 as Darelle Russell was afforded the space to shoot into the bottom right-hand corner just six minutes later.

The Abbotts were well on top by this stage and should really have added a third via Joel Docker, who could only hit the side netting from a presentable opportunity.

Barkingside’s best first-half chance came when Dimitri Larin’s throw-in from the right found Greg Akpele, who in turn twisted away from his marker and fired narrowly wide on his left foot.

It did not take Abbey long to add a third after the break as the dangerous Hallet rounded goalkeeper Tim Pitman and fired into the empty net with 35 minutes still left on the clock.

With the game won the Abbotts took their foot off the gas but still found time to add two more strikes late on and compound Barkingside’s misery.

First Docker’s perfectly-weighted cross was headed home by Hallett and then the in-form forward completed the rout in stoppage time to net his fourth of the afternoon.

Next up for the Abbotts is a visit from Wroxham on Saturday.

Ten-man Redbridge picked up a point in their battle against the drop, drawing 1-1 at Ware.

Hosts Ware started the brighter of the two sides but once the Motormen saw Charlie Parish sent off, they shut up shop and defended for a share of the spoils.

Charlie Ledula eventually found a way through for the home side but Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s side took a point thanks to Gavin Cockman’s strike.

Redbridge moved up a place to 19th and host Tilbury on Saturday before Cray Wanderers visit Oakside on Tuesday.

In the Essex Senior League, Waltham Forest secured a point in a 1-1 draw at Basildon United on Saturday thanks to a Mekki Mousse strike.

The Stags travel to Bowers & Pitsea on Saturday.
