FC Leytonstone suffered their first home league defeat of the season as they were beaten 5-4 by Poplar in the London City Airport League on Sunday.

The Lemons were left frustrated after taking a two-goal lead but contrived to lose 5-4 - a significant blow to their title hopes.

Mikael Martin and Junaid Tariq both found the back of the net to give Leytonstone the perfect start.

And a third goal looked on the cards as Martin broke free but unfortunately he was unable to capitalise as he pulled his hamstring and had to be taken off.

And as time wore on, Leytonstone demonstrated a lack of creativity and Poplar were allowed back into the contest, scoring three goals before the break to take the lead.

Trailing 3-2, the Lemons began the second half frantically chasing an equaliser but they lacked composure and lost possession routinely in the pursuit of a third goal.

And Leytonstone were eventually punished when a long ball over the top allowed Poplar to sneak in to score a fourth and extend their lead to 4-2.

Ahmed Arab got another goal back for Leytonstone but once more Poplar roared back to extend their lead to 5-3.

A fourth followed via Ahmed Pele but the Lemons, try as they might, could not force an equaliser and were left to rue their defensive fragility.

Disappointed boss Munaf Abhram said afterwards: "We have scored 13 goals in their last three games but have conceded 15 goals. Every player has got to step up and take responsibility and make sure it’s not them who makes another mistake and makes sure it’s them who makes a difference in the opposition penalty area."
