Lukasz Lewandowski beat Josh Dye to win the Open Singles final at the annual West Essex table tennis tournament in a dramatic finish.

After a very close opening game, Lewandowski beat Dye 11-9, then repeated the victory in the second game 11-8.

However, Dye did not panic and then played some of his best shots to win the third and fourth games, both by a score of 11-5.

In the deciding fifth game, the players changed ends at 5-4 before Dye won five of the next seven points to lead 10-6.

In an amazing finish to the match, Lewandowski then won six consecutive points to win 12-10 and become champion.

Lewandowski then joined partner Sal Ahmed in the Open Doubles against Nana Ansah and Paul Pells.

Again, the match went to a fifth deciding game after Ansah and Pells won the first and third games and their opponents won the second and fourth.

The decider was not as close as the other four games, though, as Lewandowski and Ahmed won 11-5 to become champions.

Ahmed had already triumphed in the Over-40 Singles final, beating Dave Page who had previously beaten him twice in league meetings.

Page began in sparkling form, winning the first two games 11-7, 11-7. The third game was a closer affair as Ahmed won 13-11.

The fourth game was also close until Ahmed won four consecutive points to win 11-7.

In the deciding fifth game, the players changed ends with Ahmed leading 5-4. Then at 8-8, Page played two uncharacteristically poor shots. Ahmed won the next point to claim victory 11-8 and become champion.

Earlier, Page had won the Veterans Doubles final with partner Pells, defeating Ahmed and Ray Brown 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10.

Earlier in the competition, the Restricted Singles (for players who play below division one) saw a close final won by Ming Lau.

Lau won the first game easily, 11-4, but then lost the next two 11-7, 11-8 as opponent Paul Matthews hit form.

The fourth game went to Lau 11-9, helped by Matthews serving into the net at 10-9. The deciding fifth game saw Lau lead 5-3 at change of ends but despite a late challenge by Matthews, Lau won by the slender margin of 11-9.

The Over-60 final saw number one seed Pells in magnificent form against defending champion Brown, winning 11-8, 11-8, 11-9.
