Redbridge face an anxious wait to see if they have been relegated from Isthmian Division One North after finishing in the bottom three, despite beating Cheshunt 2-1 on the final day.

Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton’s side finished second bottom on goal difference, with landlords Barkingside drawing 2-2 at Tilbury to leave the Motormen facing the drop.

However, with the annual spate of expulsions, resignations and transferrals to be completed, finishing in the bottom three does not guarantee Redbridge will slip out of Division One North and into the Essex Senior League.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed,” said Ross. “We are gutted to be in the bottom three with the points tally we have. You would have to go back 15 years for the last time 45 points were not enough to keep you in this division.

“But at the end of the day, we are where we are and we have finished in the bottom three because we have not been good enough over 46 games.”

Joint-boss Eaton added: “Just about every team has got a bigger budget than us and it is no surprise to see the four bottom teams have the smallest budgets in the division.”

The Motormen ended the season with their first win in eight, courtesy of goals either side of half time from Joe Gent and Gavin Cockman, though a suspected broken ankle for Cheshunt goalkeeper Richard Heyward somewhat overshadowed the win.

However, the points could prove crucial in long run, which was exactly what Ross and Eaton were keen to highlight to their players prior to the game.

“We had a big discussion and said to the lads how important it was to win the last game,” Ross explained. “Those points put us in a good position if there are any reprieves.

“Everything is on hold now though, including players’ futures and pre-season friendlies, until we know which league we will be in. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and if we do go down we will make sure we finish at the right end of the table in the Essex Senior League.”

Redbridge hope to discover their fate in the next fortnight but Eaton is refusing to be drawn in by any speculation.

He said: “We are a little bit in the dark. I think it will be the end of May before we find out because I think there are teams facing administration and the situation with Enfield Town, so I do not think we will find out immediately.”
