Essex League Dukes League Cup Round Two

Wanstead & Snaresbrook exited the League Cup at the second hurdle after suffering a 53-run loss to Billericay on Saturday.

Visitors Wanstead won the toss and elected to field first but were made to pay for the decision when opener Lee Knight smashed 88 from just 111 deliveries.

Knight’s knock proved the mainstay of the hosts’ innings as Billericay reached 248 for six; David Houghton (54) making a sizeable contribution to boot.

Haroon Awan returned the best figures for Wanstead, taking two for 34 from seven overs.

The Wanstead response got off to a faltering start when Bilal Patel was out for a golden duck.

Twenty-three from Mahesh Velani went some way towards steadying the ship but it was not until Matthew Smith (57) at number six that the away side put up any real resistance.

Jack Lord managed 29 at eight but despite brief resistance from the tail, Billericay mopped up to remove their visitors for 195; Adam Marchant (four for 43) starring with the ball.

A stunning unbeaten century from Alfie Taylor helped Chingford brush aside Walthamstow by 124 runs.

Chingford got off to an inauspicious start, with Jay Edmonds (7) and Jack Preddy (3) accounted for cheaply.

However, 91 from Rahul Patel and 115 not out from Taylor boosted the Chingford total to 315 for five.

Deepan Kandeepan made 53 in response for Walthamstow but his stay at the crease was cut short by Taylor.

And when Patel (three for 13) found his rhythm, the home side were soon toppled for 194.

Gamindu Kanishka hit 112 to steer Fives & Heronians to a narrow 23-run win at Shenfield.

Put into bat, the away side made a solid start thanks to 49 from Gary Edwards before Kanska (112) took charge.

Supported by 76 from Ben Britton, Fives reached a good total of 297 all out following a weak showing from the tail.

Greg Summers took four for 49 as Fives set about dismantling the Shenfield attack and they looked set for a comfortable victory until stern resistance from the tail.

Suhaib Sarwar (80) and Tom Austin (61) made life difficult for the visitors but their efforts were in vain as they were dismissed for 274.

Buckhurst Hill were narrowly beaten by Brentwood, losing by 17 runs.

Batting first, visitors Brentwood made 190 for eight but the Buckhurst reply only reached 173 before they were dismissed.

Quick-fire knocks from Adnan Akram and Joe Ellis-Grewal ensured Wanstead eased to a 146-run demolition of North London.

Arfan Akram (52) and Saurav Prabhakar (40) put on an opening wicket stand of 50 before the former was dismissed.

However, Akram (87) and Ellis-Grewal (80 not out) stole the show and steered the away side to a sizeable total of 318 for five.

The North London response was feeble and at ten for two, it took a sharp 68 from Hussain Shabbir to arrest their alarming start.

But Mehad Khan (four for 15) tore into the hosts’ attack and helped reduce North London to 172 for nine to seal a comprehensive win.

Bilal Butt returned figures of three for 19 as Loughton eased to an 87-run friendly win over Harlow.

Inserted into bat, Loughton posted 186 for seven thanks to Ubaid Ur Rehman Kaini (49) and Mahmad Ali Khail (40).

In reply, only three Harlow batsmen could even make double figures as Butt (three for 19) and Harry Watson (three for 27) set about removing the home side of just 99.
